Kathryn Varley
One to One Yoga
I am a Yoga Elder Practitioner with a thirty year practice within the community.
What I have learned over four decades of training combined with personal practice of embodying experiences into daily life, has helped me develop practices that anyone can experience and use to unlock their potential to welcome more ease and sense of joy into their life. And it is my absolute joy to be able to share this with others.
My quest took me to total immersion into a diverse range of practices with many of today's luminaries. It began in the eighties with yoga philosophy and meditation followed by muscular skeletal re-education, Thomas Hanna Phd, with the application of Somatic Movement, to the work of Richard Miller Phd, overcoming trauma using iRest Yoga Nidra which has been adopted by the US military for soldiers returning from active duty and to the ancient healing art and practice of Qigong.
A path opened to direct experience, demonstrating how these practices may help support and improve the lives of others.
This marked the beginning of a career in yoga therapy. My primary focus being emotional and mental health and the integration not just of yoga but also elements of contemporary psychology with movement modalities, supported by neuroscience.

Practice Background
1992-94 returned to London from the USA and was invited to facilitate one to one sessions to osteopaths and their clients at a Harley Street Practice.
1994 established Horsham Yoga, offering one to one private sessions, weekly classes, workshops and intensives. It was after one of my classes that I was approached by an addiction counsellor who wanted to trial yoga therapy in a secondary care residential setting in Surrey. This was to form the start of a special interest in mental health, it's connection to the physical and how it may impact recovery from pain, trauma and the challenges of day to day living.
1994-2014 through a network of recommendations, my practice expanded to several residential addiction recovery rehabs in the south-east of England.
2002-2016 served on further education programmes as part of a Faculty for Post Graduate Yoga Teachers at The Unity Centre, Brighton and Lewes. The Yoga Garden, Knepp Wildlife Park, W. Sussex. Greenhouse School of Yoga, Cardigan, Wales and Yoga Haven, Hove. E.Sussex
2006-2014 voluntary sessions with the Sussex and Surrey Self-Help Health Support Group, for those with compromised immune systems, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, ME. This latterly enabled me to share what I have learned in my recovery from long covid.
.
2010-2018 ran independent residential weeklong Restorative Yoga and Meditation Retreats in Europe and long weekenders in the UK

Sensory Amnesia
Following back surgery for scoliosis there was a disconnect leaving me in pain with neurological challenges and restricted movement. After two sessions, for the first time since surgery, I could feel primal reflexes in my spine and head. With improved connectivity. I continue to gain a greater understanding of change and its boundless benefits.

Back Pain
After several months of not doing much due to lower back pain and the odd visit to the Osteopath, I took a visit to Kathryn. By specific body placement and breathing I was able to learn my own movement series which I now practice at home. It helps keep my back mobile and
pain free
